After an early 3-0 lead, Penn State sacked Chuck Long and recovered the fumble on the 4-yard line. The defense held and forced a FG to tie the game at 3-3. An interception set up the Lions 2nd FG to take a 6-3 lead that they would not give up. A late TD before halftime gave the Lions a 13-10 lead at half. A scoreless 3rd quarter was highlighted by good Penn State punting, and a Tom Nichol's 56-yard FG attempt that bounced off the uprights. After trading TDs in the 4th quarter, Robert Smith fumbled after a long punt return. Iowa had the ball with another chance to win, but was stopped going for it on 4th and 1 on the Lions 29-yard line with less than 2 minutes remaining.
