RECAP

Iowa’s special teams bailed out the struggling offense once again. After a scoreless first half in which neither offense could move the ball (both under 100 yards), the Hawks needed a big play. A blocked punt in the 3rd quarter by Anterio Thompson (2nd of the season) gave Iowa the ball on the 25-yard line. Deacon Hill connected with TE Addison Ostrenga for a 2-yard TD, giving Iowa a 7-0 lead.

Northwestern was finally able to move the ball on the Hawkeye defense, setting up 1st and goal from the 2-yard line. But after 4 straight rushes, the Hawks held the Wildcats to no points. The goal line stand brought back memories of the 2006 game at Syracuse, in which the Hawkeyes had to stop eight plays from inside the 5-yard line to pull out a 20-13 overtime win. Jay Higgins led the team with 12 tackles (6 solos).

One surprise was the poor punting of Tory Taylor, who had a short punt returned for 23 yards, giving Northwestern great field position on the Iowa 22-yard line late in the 4th quarter. This time the Wildcats capitalized, tying the game at 7-7 with under 2 minutes to play. It was the first touchdown given up in 12 quarters by the defense,

With time running out, Iowa tried to move the ball, and hit a big play when Hill connected with Kaleb Brown for 23 yards into Northwestern territory. It was his first catch of the season, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. That set up Drew Stevens' 52-yard FG, which landed in the first row of the right-field bleachers with 14 seconds left, a home-run shot to deliver a 10-7 baseball-score win before a very pro-Iowa crowd at Wrigley Field (technically a home game for Northwestern, and no official attendance was provided).

On Monday before the game, Iowa Interim Athletic Director Beth Goetz announced that offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz would be relieved of his duties after the season. That news didn't seem to have an impact on the game, as Iowa’s offense struggled again, ending with 169 total yards. They ended with 65 passing yards and converted on just 4-of-12 third-down plays.
