Summary: Under the direction of first-year coach C. Vivian Stringer, the Hawks finished 17-11 overall, thus making them the sixth most improved team in the nation. In the Big Ten race, the Hawksâ€™ 11-7 record landed them a third-place tie with 1983 co-champion Indiana. Stringerâ€™s squad fell one win short of matching the school record for wins in a single season (1978-79 season was 18-11). The success of the Hawks did not go unnoticed, as their games averaged 3,382 fans and was listed as the third best in the nation. The 54-50 Iowa victory over Indiana was seen by a record crowd of 6,499 fans. The final game drew 7,130 people, which is by far a Big Ten record.
Guard Lisa Anderson ended the Iowa basketball season as the programâ€™s all-time leader in steals and assists. She was also second on the all-time scoring list. The season was also rewarding for Iowaâ€™s 6-foot-4 center Lisa Becker. Becker was named the Big Tenâ€™s Freshman of the year after leading the UI in scoring with a 15.4 ppg average. She was second on the squad in rebounds with 6.6 per game. She became only the second Hawkeye to score 400 points in a single season. Becker, who is already recorded as the ninth leading scorer in Iowa history, scored 416 points during the 1983-84 season.
