Summary: New offensive coordinator Tim Lester was able to get the Iowa rushing game moving. Running back Kaleb Johnson established single-season program records for rushing touchdowns (21) and total touchdowns (23). He was named First-team All-Big Ten, Ameche–Dayne Running Back of the Year, and a Consensus First-team All-American. He was also a finalist for the Doak Walker Award.
Despite the gain on the offensive side, the defense struggled during the year, losing 3 games when they were up double digits. They did not finish at the top of the nation in defensive yards per play like they had in the past few seasons.
They lost an early rivarly game to a strong Iowa State team on a late 54-yard FG. A road win at Minnesota got the Hawks back on track, but they were outmatched against Ohio State in the 2nd half. Iowa was effective the rest of the season at home, scoring over 40 points 4 times (3 in conference), but losses to Michigan State and UCLA on the road eliminated the Hawks from playoff discussions. A last-second FG against Nebraska ended the regular season on a high note with a 6-3 record in the new 18 team Big Ten. A late FG was the difference in the Music City Bowl loss to Missouri, ending with a 8-5 record.
Senior linebacker Jay Higgins was named First-team All-Big Ten for the second time, Butkus–Fitzgerald Linebacker of the Year, and a Unanimous First-team All-American. Senior return specialist Kaden Wetjen was named First-team All-Big Ten and Rodgers–Dwight Return Specialist of the Year, and returned one punt and one kickoff for a TD.
Kicker Drew Stevens finished 20-23, with his only misses from 51, 56 and 58 yards. Freshman punter Rhys Dakin had an outstanding first season, averaging 44.1 yards per punt, with 29 punts landing inside the 20, and only 5 touchbacks.
