Position(s): K

HIGH SCHOOL: Rob Houghtlin attended New Trier High School and lived in or near Winnetka, Illinois. He played for one season at Miami University in Ohio before transferring to Iowa, walking on as a sophomore before the 1985 season.

COLLEGE: He earned the starting placekicking job in the spring of 1985 and was put on scholarship. But two weeks into fall practice, he tore a quadriceps muscle and often didn't practice during the week.

He is most remembered for his four last-second field goals. The biggest of all occurred when #1 Iowa faced #2 Michigan, kicking a 29-yard field goal as time expired to lift Iowa to a 12-10 victory. Later that season, he made a 25-yard field goal as time ran out to beat Purdue, 27-24. He made three kicks of 50 yards or longer, including a 52-yard field goal that tied a Rose Bowl distance record. He was named First Team all-Big Ten after his sophomore season.

As a junior in 1986, he kicked a 37-yard field goal as time expired to defeat the Gophers, 30-27. He later kicked a 41-yard field goal as time expired to give Iowa a 39-38 victory in the Holiday Bowl against San Diego State.

In 1987 during his senior year, Houghtlin was again an all-Big Ten selection (2nd Team), eventually leaving Iowa as the school's all-time leader in field goals and points.

PROFESSIONAL: He was undrafted after college, but was invited to training camp with the Atlanta Falcons and Chicago Bears in 1988. He also had a one year stint in the Arena Football League.

OTHER: Iowa fans selected him for the all-time Iowa football team during the 100th anniversary celebration.

Born 1/4/1965 and is 59 years old.

Joined as walk-on (non-scholarship)  All Conference: 1st Team (1985), 2nd Team (1986)
