Hugo Herrera attended St John's Military Academy High School and lived in Delafield, Wisconsin. He grew up in Tanepantla, Mexico, and came to the US when he was 15 to attend high school. He set school records for career points, longest run of 99 yards, and highest average per carry at 9.8 yards, and ended with career rushing totals of 2,636 yards and 24 touchdowns, an average of 9.8 yards per carry. He was also a kicker, making 14-17 PATs and 3-3 field goals. He earned first team all-conference honors for three straight years.

He attended Monmouth College for two years, then transferred to Iowa in 1998.
