Frank Gilliam      Ohio Wikipedia

Frank Gilliam attended Steubenville High School and lived in Steubenville, Ohio.

COLLEGE: He was a three-year letterwinner, playing for the Hawkeyes from 1953-56 as a defensive end, where he was a member of the “Steubenville Trio” with Calvin Jones and Eddie Vincent.

He was also a second-team All-Big Ten honoree in 1954, but he missed the 1955 season because of a broken leg. He returned in 1956 to help lead the Hawks to the Rose Bowl and was named second-team All-American and first-team All-Big Ten in 1956.

PROFESSIONAL: He was selected in the seventh round of the 1957 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers. He played professionally for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the CFL before returning to Iowa as an assistant coach under Jerry Burns from 1966-70.

OTHER: He joined the Minnesota Vikings as one of the first Black scouts in the NFL in 1970, where he stayed for more than 36 years, retiring in 2007.

Born 1/7/1934 and died on 4/2/2023 at the age of 89.

All Conference: 1st Team (1956), 2nd Team (1954) All American: 2nd Team (1956) Drafted Round 7 by Green Bay Packers in 1958

Frank was a great guy and a really good scout. He had grown up in football and really studied it. I don't think we ever had an argument in all those years working together because I think we complemented each other with how we did things. From the start, we hit it off really well.
