HIGH SCHOOL: Owen Gill attended Tilden High School and lived in or near Brooklyn, New York. He was born in London, England and played rugby and soccer, but later moved to the US when he was 16. His parents were originally from Gayana. He only played two years of football in high school, and was named first team all-state and all-city in football and track, and once ran for 314 yards (20 carries) in a game, with TD runs of 57, 70 and 76 yards. During his junior year, he rushed for 853 yards on 136 carries and scored 9 TDs. As a senior, he rushed for 1,532 yards while averaging 7.5 yards per carry and scored 14 TDs. He is also the kicker, and booted a 43-yard field goal to beat Midwood 10-7, and once scored 31 of their 32 points (four TDs, a 33-yard field goal, a two-point conversion run, two PATs) in a game. He was named team MVP and MVP of the New York City All-Star game. He won the won the gold medal in the triple jump (47' 11 1/2") in the Empire State Games. He chose Iowa over Penn State, Maryland, Pittsburgh, North Carolina, Arizona, Syracuse, and Rutgers.

COLLEGE: He was the former all-time leading rusher with 2,556 yards (averaging 5.2 yards per carry) and 22 career rushing touchdowns. He was tied for the second all-time leading scorer in Iowa history (with Ronnie Harmon) with 132 points. He played in 41 of his last 42 games, alternating between tailback and fullback. He shares the Iowa record for 4 rushing touchdowns in a game in a 51-10 win at Iowa State as a junior. He was named second team All-Big Ten in 1984 as a team captain, and honorable mention in 1982 and 1983.

As a true freshman, he worked his way into playing time on special teams and reserve running back. As a sophomore in 1983, he carried the ball 120 times for 613 yards. He rushed for 798 yards in 1983, despite battling injuries throughout the season. As a senior, he rushed 182 times for 859 yards. He competed in the 1985 Hula Bowl and Japan Bowl before the NFL Draft.

He also competed for the Iowa track team, placing fifth in the triple jump at the Big Ten Championships in 1983, winning the triple jump at the Florida Relays in 1982 (48' 5 1/2"), and setting a school indoor record in the triple jump in 1982 with 48' 10 3/4".

PROFESSIONAL: He was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the 2nd round (53rd overall pick) of the 1985 NFL Draft, but was later released and picked up by the Indianapolis Colts (1985–1986), and later with the Los Angeles Rams (1987). In his career, he rushed 98 times for 490 yards and 3 TDs, and caught 21 passes for 189 yards.
