Ryan Bowen attended Fort Madison High School and lived in Fort Madison, Iowa. He was the Class 4A Player of the Year as senior after averaging 21.4 points and 10.5 rebounds for an 18-2 team. He averaged 3.5 assists and 4.5 blocks while shooting 72.6% from the field and 68.5% from the line. He was a three-time all-state selection, and first team all-conference and team MVP for three seasons. He was the only four-time letterman in Ft. Madison's history, and ended his career with 1,507 points, 749 rebounds, 231 assists, 210 steals and 294 blocked shots. He earned four letters in basketball and tennis, two in baseball and one in cross country, and was a four-time conference tennis champion.

At Iowa, he finished in the top 10 of career blocks and rebounds, and continues to hold the record in career steals. In his senior year, he averaged 14.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. He left as Iowa's career leader in field goal percentage and steals. He had 15 points and 16 rebounds for the Hawkeyes in their 1997 NCAA tournament win over Virginia.

He was a second-round draft pick of the Denver Nuggets in the 1998 NBA draft, but played in Turkey before joining the Nuggets in 1999. He played five seasons, then played two seasons with the Houston Rockets. He also signed with the New Orleans Hornets and Oklahoma City Thunder. He finished his NBA career with 1,319 points, 1,060 rebounds and 250 assists.

He returned to the University of Iowa as video coordinator for the basketball team. He later joined the Denver Nuggets and won a NBA Championship as an assistant coach in 2023.
