Matt Gatens attended City High School and lived in Iowa City, Iowa. He led his team to the state Class 4-A state title with a 25-1 overall record. He was named Iowa's "Mr. Basketball" and Gatorade Player of the Year in Iowa as a senior, and was named first team all-state as a senior and junior after earning second team honors as a sophomore. He also earned all-America recognition from Scout.com, Rivals.com, EA Sports, Athlon Sports, ESPN, The Sporting News, Nike and CBSSports.com. His father Mike Gatens was an Iowa basketball letterman (1974-76).

He finished his career ranked sixth in Iowa scoring (1,635), and second in 3-pointers made (239) and attempted (652), and became only the second Hawkeye (with Roy Marble) to surpass 1,600 points, 450 rebounds, 250 assists and 125 steals. He was a two-time team co-captain (2010-12) and Academic All-Big Ten honoree (2010 and 2012). He scored in double figures 89 career times, including posting 20+ points 18 times. He made a school record 12 consecutive 3-pointers, spanning the Indiana and Wisconsin home games his senior season and became the first Big Ten player to score 30 points in back-to-back games versus two ranked teams since 1996-97 when he dropped 30 against #18 Indiana and 33 versus #15 Wisconsin his senior year. He set the Iowa single-season record for free throw percentage (.904) in 2009.

Gatens was recruited by Steve Alford, coached by Todd Lickliter, and finished his career with coach Fran McCaffrey. He later joined McCaffery's coaching staff as an assistant coach in June 2022 after stints with Auburn and Drake.
