HIGH SCHOOL: Melvin Foster attended Jack Yates High School and lived in or near Houston, Texas. He led his team to the state championship where he made 26 tackles. He earned All-State honors, along with USA Today All-American honors. He was rated the No. 1 prospect in Texas, and Parade magazine named him the nation's best prep linebacker. He signed with Iowa over Oklahoma State,

COLLEGE: He led Iowa in tackles as a junior (116 in 1989) and senior (107 in 1990). Foster’s 337 career tackles rank 15th in program history, while his 116 tackles in 1989 ties for 39th-best in a single season. He is one of 19 Hawkeyes to be credited with 20 or more tackles in a single game when he made 20 stops and intercepted a pass that led to Iowa’s game-winning touchdown against Michigan State in 1990. He was named Sports Illustrated's defensive player of the week. He was a first-team All-Big Ten honoree and shared team MVP honors following the 1990 season. He helped lead the Hawks to the 1991 Rose Bowl. He had two career interceptions.

PROFESSIONAL: He signed with the Dallas Cowboys.

OTHER: He was inducted into the Harris County - Houston Sports Authority Hall of Fame.

Born 12/23/1966 and died on 3/21/2026 at the age of 59.
