Matt Eyde attended East Lansing High School and lived in East Lansing, Michigan. He earned all-state honors, and was team captain and MVP. He was also a basketball standout, nominated to the McDonald's all-American high school team.

He transferred from Michigan State to Iowa in 1990. He sat out the 1990 season and played scout team. In 1991, he broke his ankle and missed the entire season. In 1992, he was the backup to Paul Burmeister, and played sparingly in 1993.
