HIGH SCHOOL: Kevin Kunnert attended Wahlert High School and lived in or near Dubuque, Iowa. He helped lead his team to a third-place finish in the state tournament as a senior. He was recruited by Ralph Miller, but played for Dick Schultz.

COLLEGE: He ended with 1,145 career points and grabbed 914 rebounds during his 72 game career, averaging a career double-double with 15.9 points and 12.7 rebounds. He was the Hawkeyes' all-time leading rebounder. He has two of the top rebounding games in program history (23 rebounds vs. Drake, Illinois, in 1972) and had eight 20+ rebound games. He had a school-record 48 double-doubles, including 20 in 1972-73 and 19 in 1971-72 and averaged a career double-double at 15.9 points and 12.7 rebounds. He led the Big Ten in rebounding and field goal percentage his senior year, averaging 19.2 points and 13.9 rebounds on 54.5% shooting, and averaged 18.2 points and 14.7 rebounds as a junior.

He was named First-team All-American by Helms in 1973 and was a two-time second-team All-Big Ten selection (1972, 1973) and two-time team Most Valuable Player (1972, 1973). He was a two-time team Most Valuable Player for the Hawkeyes in 1972 and 1973.

PROFESSIONAL: He was the 12th overall selection in the 1st Round of the 1973 NBA draft by the Chicago Bulls, but was traded to the Buffalo Braves. He also played for the Houston Rockets, San Diego Clippers, Portland Trail Blazers over nine seasons in the NBA.

OTHER: He was elected to the Dubuque Wahlert Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018. In 2024, he was inducted into the UI Athletics Hall of Fame.
