HIGH SCHOOL: B.J. Armstrong attended Brother Rice High School and lived in or near Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He averaged 28 points and 6 assists, and was named to the 1985 first team All-Catholic Team by the Detroit Free Press. He holds the schoolâ€™s single-game scoring record with 51 points.

COLLEGE: He left Iowa as the all-time leader in assists (517), and is currently ranked fourth all-time. He also ranked sixth on the school's all-time steals list (178) and fourth in total points (1,705). He shot 44.3% from three-point range. He averaged 18.6 points and 5.4 assists as a senior, and was part of the #1 ranked Iowa team during the 1986-1987 season that reached the Elite Eight.

PROFESSIONAL: He was selected by the Chicago Bulls in the first round of the 1989 NBA draft (18th overall pick). He played for the Bulls from 1989-1995, winning 3 NBA championships. He was an NBA All-Star in 1994. He later played for Golden State, Charlotte and Orlando, before retiring with the Bulls in 1999.

In 2018, he was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, and was inducted into the Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame in 2023.

My favorite thing that Iâ€™ve ever done was go to the University of Iowa. I never dreamed as a young kid that I would have an opportunity to be the first in my family to get a college degree, and be the first in my family to play sports at the collegiate level, let alone the professional level. I remember my grandmother always just wanted us to go to school and go to college. So for her to visit me and the University of Iowa and be able to walk to a class with me was probably the thrill of my life. My grandmother didnâ€™t have a chance to finish high school, and for her to walk to class with me at the University of Iowa is the highlight for me of my life. We talk about going pro, and playing, and winning games, but she always just had this idea that she just wanted us to get our education. So, for me to do that, and I remember walking to class with her, it was just like a great moment. It was a great moment for the Armstrong family to be able to have that, and that happened right there in Iowa City. So, going to the University of Iowa just gave me something that was far beyond anything that I had imagined. I just remember that was a really special moment for me and for our family.

I came from Detroit. I wasnâ€™t used to that, people smiling all of the time, people smiling and helping you. I just heard a story, a young lady was saying she lost her jacket last week, and she had money in it. We were joking â€” if that happens in Los Angeles, you wouldnâ€™t see the jacket again, let alone the money in the pocket. Stories like that, it makes this place special. Iâ€™ve always said itâ€™s about the people â€” people make this place special. Iâ€™m really proud to say this is home, because it always feels like home.
