HIGH SCHOOL: Drew Thelwell attended Master's Academy High School and lived in or near Orlando, Florida. He attended Orangewood Christian in Orlando before finishing his prep career at the Master's Academy in Vero Beach. At Orangewood, he averaged 23.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 2018-19, while surpassing 1,000 career points in his prep career. At the Master's Academy, he averaged 19 points, four assists and five rebounds per game, and was awarded All-State by the Florida Athletic Coaches Association. He also earned Second-Team All-Area by the Orlando Sentinel, and was a team captain. He signed with Morehead State.

COLLEGE: At Morehead State, he averaged 10 points, 6.2 assists and three rebounds per game. He started a combined 68 games over the last two seasons. His career-highs in points (11.1) and rebounds (4.3) per game, along with 3-point percentage (38.1%), came during the 2022-23 season. After graduating from Morehead State, he transferred to Iowa in the 2024-25 season for his final year of eligibility.
