Matt Bohnet attended Grand Ledge High School and lived in Grand Ledge, Michigan. He was named honorable mention all-America by Prep Star and earned first team all-state honors as a senior and selected to Michigan all-star team. He was named first team all-conference as a junior and senior and was league MVP as a senior and team captain and MVP as a senior. he helped lead his team to the Michigan Division I state championship, completing 123-207 passes for 2,052 yards and 17 TDs and rushed for 390 yards and 13 TDs.

He transferred to Eastern Michigan University in 2003.
