HIGH SCHOOL: Gordy Bohannon attended South Pasadena High School and lived in or near Eagle Rock, California. He was twice named to the All-American and all-state teams in football after setting records for highest pass completion % in both seasons, and leading his team to the state championship his junior year. He earned three letters in both basketball and football, and earned all-conference honors in both sports all three years.

COLLEGE: He began his college career at Cal Poly-Pomona with future Iowa wide receiver Keith Chappelle. He was a team co-MVPs with Chappelle during his freshmen season, earning rookie of the year honors. He transferred to Glendale Junior College, where he was named junior college honorable mention All-American in 1978 after breaking all the school passing yardage records, completing 181 of 303 passes (58%) for 2,396 yards and 22 TDs. He was ranked the 3rd best passer that season, and signed with new head coach Hayden Fry at Iowa with two years of eligibility remaining.

He started two games in the 1979 season against Northwestern and Minnesota. He threw 2 TDs (44 and 12 yards) and rushed for 36 yards against Northwestern. He ended the season 13 of 30 for 202 yards, 2 TDs and 2 interceptions, and rushed 23 times for 57 yards and 2 TDs. He had ankle surgery in the spring of 1980, and redshirted the 1980 season.

He was the starting QB for the 1981 Rose Bowl team, completing 72 of 142 passes (50.7%) for 999 yards, with 6 TD passes and 7 interceptions. He also rushed 81 times for 304 yards (3.8 yard average) and 2 TDs.
