Payton Sandfort           

HIGH SCHOOL: Payton Sandfort attended Waukee High School and lived in or near Waukee, Iowa. He was the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association 4A Player of the Year as a senior and was a McDonald’s All-American nominee in 2021 after he averaged 16.6 points (56% FG; 49% 3-pt), 7.7 rebounds, and 3.1 assists his senior season. He averaged 19.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 4.0 assists his junior season and was a two-time team captain. He shot 45% from 3-point range his sophomore and junior seasons and was a two-time first-team All-State selection, and named to the All-Elite Team in 2021. He was first-team all-conference, State All-Tournament Team, and All Substate Team honoree as a junior when he led his team to a State championship as a senior. He led team to a conference and substate championship, and State tournament runner-up finish as a junior. He was a starter on the golf team that won the 2020 state and district championship, and was an individual runner-up at the district tournament, shooting an even-par 71. He was a three-time All-Academic Award (Central Iowa Metro League).

COLLEGE: During his four-year career, he scored 1,619 points, which ranks 11th in program history. He made 271 career 3-point field goals – second-most all-time – and finished with the best free throw percentage (.896) in the record books. He started 74 of his 134 career games (tied for the seventh-most all-time), where he made at least one three pointer 76 times. He had two or more 3s in 64 games, three or more 37 times, four or more in 29 contests and 5+ nine times, including a career-best eight 3s in his final game as a Hawkeye against Illinois in the 2025 Big Ten Tournament.

He is one of two players to finish his career with 1,500+ points, 500+ rebounds and 250+ 3-point field goals. He was named third team all-Big Ten after the 2023-24 season.

After the 2023-24 season, he declared for the NBA Draft, but returned to finish his final season. During his final season, he earned honorable mention All-Big Ten recognition for the third honor of his career.
