Walter 'Mac' McCausland attended Maquoketa High School and lived in Maquoketa, Iowa. He lettered in football and basketball, and was named honorable mention All-State in basketball during his senior year.

He joined the freshman team at Iowa for the 1964-65 but did not earn a letter. He spent three seasons as assistant freshman coach, and later graduated from Iowa in 1969.

He's most well-known as a TV announcer for Iowa basketball for many years. He worked alongside Jim Zabel at WHO Radio and a statewide network for four years as an analyst. He performed the same duties for 14 seasons on Iowa’s television network with play-by-play broadcaster Larry Morgan until 1999. He was a longtime columnist for the Voice of the Hawkeyes publication, and recently had been a weekly guest during basketball season on the Todd Brommelkamp Show with Alex Kuhn on KGYM-AM.

He was honored as the National I-Club Hawk of the Year in 1980. In 2002, he was recognized as an Iowa Letterwinners Club Honorary Letterwinner. He was a longtime president of the Black Hawk County I-Club.

His son Kent McCausland played at Iowa from 1996-1999.

Born 2/1/1946 and died on 2/5/2022 at the age of 76.
