Corby Smith attended Loyola High School and lived in Los Angeles, California. He originally signed with USC out of high school to play for his father, Larry Smith. He transferred to Iowa for the 1993 season, then was eligible to play in 1994. He injured his shoulder in a game vs Illinois in 1994 and didn't play again. He decided to opt-out of his final season, and joined his father as an assistant coach at Missouri in 1995.
