Brandon Scherff attended Denison-Schleswig High School and lived in Denison, Iowa. He was a two-way lineman, earning first team all-state honors on offense as a senior after earning second team all-state on defense as a junior. As a sophomore, he played quarterback, passing for 1,200 yards on the season. He chose his Iowa over offers from Kansas State, Missouri, and Nebraska.

He missed part of his sophomore season due to injury. He had a strong junior season, and was a top NFL prospect, but decided to return for his senior season. In 2014, he was named the Outland Trophy winner, and was a unanimous first team All-American. He was also named the Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year, and was first team All-Big Ten for the second year in a row. Overall, he started all 26 games over final two seasons at left tackle and had 36 career starts.

The Washington Redskins selected him in the first round (fifth overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft. He has been named to the Pro Bowl in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
