Marvin McNutt attended Hazelwood Central High School and lived in Florissant, Missouri. He chose Iowa over scholarship offers from Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska and Missouri. He was recruited to Iowa as a quarterback, but practiced and played as a wide receiver starting in 2008.

In 2009, he had a game-winning touchdown catch on the final play of a 2009 win at Michigan State to extend Iowa's unbeaten streak, and caught a game-winning touchdown with 2:50 remaining in a 2010 win at Indiana. He caught 8 touchdown passes and was named honorable mention All-American.

In 2010, he was ranked sixth in the Big Ten in receiving yards per game (66.2) and ninth in receptions per game (4.1) and caught another 8 touchdowns, and was named second team All-Big Ten.

In his senior season (2011), he broke the school record with 12 touchdowns and 1,315 receiving yards in a season, and became Iowa's all-time leader in receiving touchdowns with 28 and receiving yardage with 2,861 on 170 receptions. He averaged 16.8 yards per catch during his career. He holds three of the 10 longest scoring receptions in school history (92, 88, 80 yards). He was named the Big Ten Richter–Howard Receiver of the Year and first team All-Big Ten. He was also on the Iowa Leadership Group all 5 years. His 82 receptions in 2011 also tied Kevin Kasper for most catches in a season by a Hawkeye

He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the sixth round (194th overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft, and spent time with the Miami Dolphins, Carolina Panthers, and Washington Redskins.
