Kent McCausland attended West High School in Waterloo, Iowa. He averaged 17 points, 5.1 rebounds and five assists as senior, and was a two-time first team all-conference and all-Metro and second team all-state. He holds school record for most career three-pointers (100).

He led the nation in three-point field goal percentage (.522, 70-134) and set Iowa record for single-season three-point percentage in 1997. He won the Ed Steitz Award (three-point accuracy) from Basketball Hall of Fame. He ranks second in career three-pointers (155) and third in three-point attempts (331).

His father Mac McCausland was a former basketball player and later play-by-play announcer for Iowa for many decades.
