Archie Mays attended Fairview High School and lived in Dayton, Ohio. He averaged 19 points and 11 rebounds in his senior season, and was considered as one of the top college prospects in the area. He was a two-time, Journal Herald Area All-Star, 1st Team All-City and Dayton Daily News-Coaches All Greater Dayton selection. He was also an exceptional student in the class room, carrying a 3.4 accumulative grade point average and president of his senior class. He chose Iowa partly to continue on with a medical degree and follow in his father's footsteps.

At Iowa, he scored 218 points, grabbed 129 rebounds and contributed 60 assists in his career. He suffered a severe knee injury that detoured some of his playing time.

After college, he moved to Los Angeles in 1985 after having graduated from medical school to begin his career as an orthopedic surgeon. He was named to the Fairview High School Hall of Fame in 2019.

Born 2/12/1955 and is 71 years old.

Probably one of the most reliable players I've ever played with. I remember when we went down to Indiana the same week that they got their number one ranking, they beat us real badly. We couldn't buy a bucket no matter what we did, and I had the ball on several occasions on the wing and really didn't know what to do. There are things that remind me of him almost daily. He was like a family member. It was totally tragic for me. I was devastated. I'm still devastated. I'm just so happy that somebody as awakened such as yourself to recognize the fact that Bruce was as good as he was, and I always wondered why Iowa did not give him more (recognition).
