Erek Hansen attended Trinity High School in Bedford, Texas. After high school, he attended Kirkwood Community College, then transferred to Iowa as a sophomore.

He left Iowa third in career blocked shots with 212, including 89 blocked shots in 2006, which is the third best single season total in school history. He led the Big Ten in blocked shots as both a junior and senior.

He was named Co-Most Valuable Player, and named Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Year, named to Big Ten Conference all-Defensive team, and named Defensive all-American by collegeinsiders.com.
