T.J. Hockenson attended Chariton High School and lived in Chariton, Iowa. He was named elite all-state first team as a senior, and was also named first-team all-state as a sophomore and junior. He holds school records for receiving yards in a game, season, and career and holds records for touchdown receptions in a season and career.

After redshirting in 2016, he recorded 24 receptions for 320 yards and three touchdowns. He had his best game of the year in Iowa's upset victory over then-No. 3 Ohio State, where he led the team with five receptions for 71 yards and two touchdowns. He was named Academic All-Big Ten and honorable mention Big Ten All-Freshman team.

In 2018, he led the team with 760 receiving yards, and was second in receptions (49) and touchdowns (6). He set a career high with 125 receiving yards, including a 46-yard connection from quarterback Nate Stanley in a 28-17 loss against Wisconsin.

He was the recipient of the 2018 John Mackey Award as the top tight end in the nation, named recipient of the Ozzie Newsome Award, and was named Kwalick-Clark Tight End of the Year in the Big Ten. He was also a first-team All-American, Academic All-Big Ten for the second year (2017, 2018), and was named first-team All-Big Ten.

After the 2018 season, he decided to leave school with two years of eligibility remaining to enter the NFL draft. He was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the first round as the eighth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
