Marshal Yanda attended Anamosa High School and lived in Anamosa, Iowa. He was a two-time first team all-conference selection in football.

His first two college seasons were played for North Iowa Area Community College. He signed with Iowa for his junior season in 2005, and started immediately. In 2006, he had earned 2nd team All-Big Ten and 3rd team All-American, and was selected to compete in Senior Bowl. The Baltimore Ravens selected Yanda in the third round (86th overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft.

In 2012, Yanda started 14 games and won his first championship ring as the Ravens won Super Bowl XLVII against the San Francisco 49ers. He earned six consecutive Pro Bowl selections from 2011–16 (the longest active streak amongst guards at the time), but missed most of the 2017 season due to injury. He again was elected to the Pro Bowl in 2018 and 2019. He retired after 13 seasons with the Ravens prior to the 2020 season.
