Bernie Wyatt      New York 

Position(s): RB, DB

HIGH SCHOOL: Bernie Wyatt attended Amityville High School and lived in or near Amityville, New York. He scored 170 points at tailback in 1956, which broke Jim Brown’s scoring record for Long Island high schools. He excelled in basketball and track as well.

He was recruited to the University of Iowa by an assistant coach for the Hawkeyes, Whitey Piro, another native of Long Island.

COLLEGE: He scored two rushing touchdowns in his career. He also switched to defensive back and was voted the team’s most valuable player in 1960. In 1961, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 19th round, and was drafted in 1962 by Houston of the American Football League (AFL).

OTHER: He coached in Long Island, and at Iowa City Regina before joining Bob Commings' staff. He was retained by Hayden Fry as recruiting coordinator in 1979. He enjoyed huge success recruiting the New York and New Jersey area. He later left with Barry Alvarez to help turn around the Wisconsin football program.

Born 8/21/1938 and died on 4/1/2023 at the age of 84.

Drafted Round 19 by Pittsburgh Steelers in 1961
