Year signed with Iowa: 1989

HIGH SCHOOL: Mike Wells attended Fox High School and lived in or near Arnold, Missouri. He had 411 tackles and nine fumble recoveries, and had 132, 131, and 105 tackles his last three seasons. He also won the state discus title as sophomore. He was named to the Parade, USA Today and Prep Report first team all-American teams, and was the USA Today all-sports Missouri state Athlete-of-the-Year and SuperPrep Midlands Defensive Player of the Year. He was named St. Louis Post-Dispatch College Prospect of the Year. He took visits to Michigan, Notre Dame, USC, Missouri and Iowa, and ultimately chose the Hawkeyes after Michigan's offer fell through.

COLLEGE: He had 181 solo and 128 assisted tackles, 54 tackles for loss, 33 sacks (a school record) and 10 pass break ups in his Iowa career. He was one of Iowa's tri-captains for 1993 and became Iowa's all-time sack leader in 1992 with three sacks vs. Northwestern. He was named first team all-Big Ten in 1992 and 1993, and was co-winner of 1992 and 1993 Roy J. Carver MVP Awards. He was named to the sophomore all-America team by Football News in 1991, and was honorable mention all-Big Ten in 1990. He earned co-winner of Coaches Appreciation Award for defense in 1990.

PROFESSIONAL: After being drafted in the 4th round by the Minnesota Vikings in 1994, he was released prior to the season, but quickly picked up by the Detroit Lions. He was a backup defensive lineman until 1997, when he started all sixteen games that season. He was signed as an unrestricted free agent that off-season by the Chicago Bears, and led the team in tackles in each of his three seasons. He later signed with the Indianapolis Colts, where he played for one season before deciding to retire due to a shoulder injury.

All Conference: 1st Team (1992, 1993), Honorable Mention (1990) Drafted Round 4 by Minnesota Vikings in 1994
