Ross Verba attended Dowling High School and lived in West Des Moines, Iowa. He moved to tight end as a junior after starting prep career as offensive lineman. He was named to the Parade's all-American team, and selected Iowa's player of the year by Parade. He was also named first team all-state elite team in 1991, and was team captain and MVP.

He was recruited as a tight end, but later moved to offensive tackle prior to the 1993 fall practice. He was elected one of four co-captains for his senior season. He was a key member of an offensive line that has led the way for Sedrick Shaw to rush for 4,156 yards over the past four years, including three straight seasons over 1,000 yards, along with 3 seasons clearing the way for Tavian Banks. He was a first-team All-Big Ten guard his senior season, and competed in the Senior Bowl. He left Iowa with 35 career starts.

He was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the 1st round (30th overall) of the 1997 NFL Draft. He was the first rookie to ever start a Super Bowl at left tackle with the Packers in Super Bowl XXXII. He played four seasons for the Packers from 1997 to 2000, and four with the Cleveland Browns from 2001 to 2004. He ended his NFL career with the Detroit Lions in 2006.
