Matt Szykowny      Pennsylvania

Pronunciation: So-Conee
Position(s): QB

Matt Szykowny attended North Catholic High School and lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He scored 1,852 points during his basketball career, which is still a record. He quarterbacked his football team to three Pittsburgh Catholic League titles from 1956 to 1958.

In 1961, he had a hand in five touchdowns in a 47-15 Homecoming victory over Wisconsin in 1961. He threw nine straight completions in the first half, and was 14 for 17 for the game. Three of those passes went for touchdowns. He ran for two more. He started that game in place of Wilburn Hollis, who was out with an injury. He was 2nd in the Big Ten with 79 completions on 120 attempts for 1,078 yards and 7 TDs. He also kicked 22 of 29 PATs.

In 1962, he had an 80-yard completion to Larry Ferguson against the Badgers in 1962 to tie for the 12th longest pass play in school history. He is the only Iowa quarterback to beat Ohio State and Michigan in the same season.

At Iowa, he threw 290 passes over those three seasons for 2,038 yards, with 14 touchdowns and 26 interceptions.

He also started on the Iowa basketball team as a sophomore in the 1960-61 season, averaging 9.9 points per game, and averaged 7.5 points as a junior off the bench. He lettered in baseball as a sophomore and played second base for the Hawkeyes’ Big Ten runner-up baseball team as a senior. He led the league in fielding as a senior. After Iowa, he was signed by the Minnesota Twins as a third baseman. He accomplished the rare feat of lettering in three major sports at a Big Ten school. His exact date of birth is unknown.

Born 6/18/1941 and died on 7/27/2020 at the age of 79.

Drafted Round 15 by Pittsburgh Steelers in 1963
