Ryan Donahue attended St. Rita High School and lived in Chicago, Illinois. He was named First team USA Today All-American, and was first team all-state and all-conference as a senior. He held the state record for longest punt in a playoff game (90 yards), and held school and conference records for longest field goal (55 yards). He also had 5 FGs over 50 yards in high school.

During his freshman year, he had only 12 of his 50 punts returned for a grand total of 60 yards. He was named to The Sporting News Freshman All-America team and was named honorable mention all-Big Ten. In 2008, he was named a finalist for the Ray Guy Award for best college punter, and was named a finalist again in 2010. In 2009, he was again named an honorable mention all Big Ten selection.

In his Iowa career, he started all 4 years as punter and holder on field goals. He was named to a conference team every year, and had five of the longest 14 punts in school history, covering 82 (second), 76 (fifth), 73, twice (10th) and 71 (14th) yards.

He was signed by the Lions as an undrafted free agent in 2011, and played one season before suffering a quad injury. In 2011, he had 49 punts for an average of 42.7 yards, and a net of 35.6 yards.
