Scott Rathke attended City High School and lived in Iowa City, Iowa. He was named second team all-conference as a senior, helping his team to the Class 4-A state title with perfect 13-0 record in 1996. He recorded 22 tackles as a junior and 19 tackles as a senior.

Prior to Iowa, he attended Concordia College and started all nine games. He walked-on for the Hawkeyes but played sparingly.
