Derek Price         

HIGH SCHOOL: Derek Price attended Marcos de Niza High School and lived in or near Tempe, Arizona. He ran a 47.2 second 400 meters time in track, but did not have any scholarship offers for football, and decided to attend nearby Mesa Community College (MCC).

COLLEGE: He played two seasons at MCC where he caught 31 passes for 469 yards and 4 TDs. He was named team MVP in 1992 and honored as the All-American Junior College Grid Wire and Western Conference Offensive Player of the Year.

He chose Iowa over many major schools on the west coast, and joined the Hawkeyes in the spring of 1993. He redshirted the 1993 season after suffering a broken ankle, and played two seasons as a backup tight end, where he caught 6 passes for 55 yards.

PROFESSIONAL: He signed a free agent contract with the Detroit Lions in 1996 and made the team as a rookie. His time in the NFL was cut short due to a severe neck injury, which required career-ending surgery after his first season.
