He was a defensive lineman who grew up in American Samoa, and played his first two years at Iowa Wesleyan University before walking on at Iowa. He earned a scholarship after his first season. His son, A.J. Epenesa, followed in his father's footsteps and played at Iowa in the late 2010's.
