Aaron Mickens attended Copperas Cove High School and lived in Copperas Cove, Texas. He was named 3rd team all-state and second team all-conference all three years in high school, along with team captain as a junior and senior. He rushed 68 times for 449 yards and seven TDs in five games as a senior.

At Iowa, he provided stability along with Sam Brownlee to an Iowa backfield that was decimated with injuries in 2004. He ranked fourth on the team in carries (42) and rushing yards (127), was fifth on the team in receptions (15), and he scored one of the teamâ€™s 10 rushing touchdowns that season. He saw action in 31 games as a Hawkeye, carrying the ball 54 times and recording 17 receptions.
