Patrick McCaffery           

HIGH SCHOOL: Patrick McCaffery attended West High School and lived in or near Iowa City, Iowa. He led West to a record of 17-5 by averaging 25.1 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. He shot 58 percent from the field and 45 percent form 3-point range. He left as the all-time leading scorer at West High. He was ranked as the 60th-best recruit in the nation according to ESPN.com and helped his team to the 2017 4A State Championship as well as state runner-up finishes in 2016 and 2018. He was a two-time team captain (2018, 2019). He was named first team all-state, all-conference, and all-sub state as a junior and senior, and second team all-state, first team all-conference, and first team all-sub state as a sophomore. He averaged 25.1 points per game (58.2 field goal percentage) and 7.6 rebounds as a senior, 19.9 points and six rebounds per game as a junior, and 13.8 points and five rebounds as a sophomore. He was a three-year starter and four-year letterwinner.

COLLEGE: He redshirted his first season after dealing with medical issues, but received the Mary Ann Raymond Donnelly Fighting Spirit Award. In the 2020-2021 season, he earned the team’s Most Improved Player Award after playing in all 31 games, averaging 5.2 points and 2.7 rebounds. He made 18 of 26 field goal attempts (.692) in last six home games and posted career bests in scoring (19), 3-pointers made (3) and attempted (6), rebounds (6), field goals made (8) and attempted (13) in victory over Nebraska.

In the 2021-2022 season, he started all 32 games, and scored a season-high 18 points twice (Minnesota; Richmond). He was named as Iowa's Big Ten Men’s Basketball Sportsmanship Award winner and co-winner of the team’s Kenny Arnold Hawkeye Spirit Award.

In the 2022-2023 season, he was named to the Emerald Coast Classic All-Tournament Team and played in 27 games, including starting the first 14 games of the season. He averaged 9.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.0 assist and 0.8 steals per contest. He scored a personal-best 24 points in home game vs. Wisconsin, and drained a career-best six 3-pointers in home contest vs. Nebraska, and posted career bests in steals (5) and blocks (2) in a loss at #1 Purdue.

After the 2023-2024 season, he transferred to Butler for his final season (extra year for COVID).

OTHER: At 14, he was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. He is the son of head coach Fran McCaffery and brother of Connor McCaffery. He was granted permission to wear uniform #22 by lettermen and All-American Bill Seaberg (1954-56), so he could honor Austin “Flash” Schroeder, who passed away in 2015.
