Mike Gatens attended West High School and lived in Iowa City, Iowa. He was an All-American, and twice named all-state and all-conference in the early 1970s, and still holds the school’s single-game records for field-goal attempts and turnovers. He also lettered in golf and baseball.

He played in only three games as a freshman at Iowa under Dick Schultz in 1972-73, although he later saw slightly more playing time when Lute Olson took over as the head coach. He got into 62 games in his career, averaging 3.1 points and 2.2 rebounds.

His son, Matt Gatens had a successful career for the Hawkeyes in the late 2000's.

Born 6/2/1954 and is 70 years old.

Here's a funny thing; I'd buy clothes off of him. He was styling. He came to our wedding in Charles City and there aren't many black people in Charles City, so he comes to our wedding in 1976 and he was just dude-ed up. I would buy boots that zipped up the side. He'd bring them back and wear them, or I'd buy them brand new from him. Stylish boots. He was the style man of our team. He kind of reminded me of a Walt Frazier type.

It's (his early death) forgotten because he was gone for nine years. Chris (Street) was still here. Bucky O'Connor was still our coach. And that's the only reason. I don't think Bruce has ever been, I don't want to sound mean or anything, but the accolades, the remembrance, given his due. Bruce King was really good, and at a time when coach Olson was building that program. He was just a great guy, and still I miss him.
