The season got off to a 5-0 start, but the team struggled through a 4-game losing streak, but rallied to win their last 3 games, and went on to pull an upset win over the Pac-10 co-champions in the Sun Bowl. Iowa won its final two games of the regular season to earn an invitation to the Sun Bowl. They ended the year with an 8-4 record, including a 4-4 Big Ten mark. Iowa was ranked in the top 25 in the final polls by the Associated Press, UPI and CNN/USA Today.
