#2 Iowa  vs  Purdue   Purdue

L    7 - 24

Head Coach: Kirk Ferentz

David Bell continued to wreak havoc against Iowa. He caught 11 passes for 240 yards and 1 TD. It wasn't much different than the two previous games against Iowa (both over 100 yards receiving). His three-year, three-game totals against Iowa: 35 receptions, 558 yards, five touchdowns. Purdue QB Aidan O'Connell went 30-for-40 and 375 yards and 2 TDs.

The Hawks have lost 4 of the last 5 games against Purdue, and this game was never in doubt. The Hawks struggled on offense with 4 turnovers, and only caused 1 turnover. The offense struggled to move the ball, and played from behind most of the day.

The Hawks struggled to take advantage of Purdue's loss of star receiver Rondale Moore and head coach Jeff Brohm's COVID diagnosis. Iowa struggled to stop David Bell (13 passes, 3 TDs and 121 yards) and RB Zander Horvath (21 carries for 129 yards). They also had 100 yards in penalties.

Spencer Petras' first start at QB showed signs of promise, going 22/39 and 265 yards passing, and ran for one TD. Iowa was able to rush for almost 200 yards, but lost two costly fumbles deep in Purdue territory.

Iowa punter Tory Taylor excelled in his first game with 6 punts averaging 44.2 yards and a long of 52 yards, with two punts downed inside the 20. Keith Duncan added 2 FGs.

L    24 - 27

Head Coach: Kirk Ferentz

A 46-yard field goal as time expired by Purdue placekicker Paul Griggs gave the Boilermakers a 27-24 win. The loss is the fourth consecutive defeat for the Hawkeyes, who are now 4-6 on the season, 2-4 in the Big Ten, and virtually assured of falling short of bowl eligibility for the first time in twelve years. It was the first time Purdue has won in Kinnick in 20 years. Iowa played with alternative uniforms (silver helmets and pants) to honor Veterans Day.

Purdue used a strong passing attack and a defense that forced five Iowa turnovers to take a 36-14 win in West Lafayette. Boilermaker QB Drew Brees completed 31 of 44 passes for 362 yards and four touchdowns. Purdue built a 19-0 halftime advantage and increased the margin to 29 before Iowa got on the board. The Boilermakers intercepted two passes and recovered three of Iowa's four fumbles. Hawkeye senior DB Eric Thigpen had an interception and returned a fumble 29 yards for Iowa's first score. RB Robbie Crockett took his first carry as a Hawkeye 30 yards for a touchdown. Sophomore QB Scott Mullen, in his second career start, completed 16 of 29 passes for 158 yards, while Bashir Yamini had the best receiving day of his career with six catches for 59 yards. DE Jeff Kramer also had a pass interception for the Iowa defense. Thigpen led the defenders with nine tackles while DT Anthony Herron had eight and LB Travis Senters seven.

He overshadowed the play of Iowa's QB Pete Gales, who broke a school record with 321 yards passing, surpassing the record set by Mike Cilek in 1967 against Illinois.

It was the Boilermakers' 20th straight win over Iowa.

Purdue's alert Boilermakers intercepted two Iowa passes and pounced on five fumbles today to survive a record Hawkeye aerial assault. Gary Snook, the Iowa quarterback, hit on 26 of 49 passes for 310 yards, and his completions tied the Big Ten record and his attempts and yardage both set conference marks. Purdue scored its winning touchdown on a pass interception. George Catavolos, a defensive end, intercepted two of Snook's aerials, one of them on the Iowa 29 and scoring what proved to be the margin of victory.

The Boilermakers set up their other two scores on another interception and an Iowa fumble. The Boilermakers took an early lead, in the first quarter when Catavolos picked off a Snook pass deep in his own territory and carried it 51 yards to the Iowa 44. Purdue made it 13‐0 when Jim Long, an end, dived on a fumble. Purdue marched 54 yards and QB Bob Griese sneaked over from the 1. He added the extra point. Iowa narrowed the gap with a 75‐yard march capped by a 15‐yard scoring pass from Snook to Dalton Kimble, a sophomore halfback. Catavolos then scored on his second interception to make it 19‐7.

Iowa again traveled the airwaves after picking off a pitchout on the Purdue 22. The Snook ‐ to ‐ Kimble combination clicked again for eight yards and the final Hawkeye touchdown. Iowa threatened late in the game, but the fifth Hawkeye fumble killed the comeback attempt.
