In the 3rd quarter, Ricky Stanzi threw four consecutive interceptions. Then in the 4th quarter, he started off 3-for-3 for 177 yards and two TDs, and Iowa scored 28 points to pull out the win. The Hawks stayed close in the 3rd quarter after Tyler Sash recorded the most unusual interception in recent memory. With Indiana looking to score, a pass attempt bounced off four different players before the sophomore caught it and scampered 86 yards for a touchdown.

But they couldn't stop the Hoosiers offense either, giving up 413 total yards, including 3 TDs by James Hardy. Iowa also missed two FGs into a stiff wind. One positive was the receiving of Junior WR Herb Grigsby, who caught 5 passes for 66 yards and ran for a 25-yard touchdown.

IU was able to move the ball, but Grant Steen had three interceptions to end IU's scoring threats, tying his career best. Indiana used a pair of scoring drives in the final quarter to take a 14-7 win over Iowa. The Hawkeyes led 7-0 after an 84-yard drive to start the third quarter. The score came on an 11-yard pass from Randy Reiners to TE Zeron Flemister. Indiana scored its first touchdown with 8:40 remaining, concluding a 99-yard drive. But DT Jared DeVries blocked the extra point attempt and Iowa led 7-6. The Hoosiers would drive 75 yards in the final two minutes, scoring with 41 seconds to play on an eight-yard run by QB Antwaan Randle El. The Hawkeye defense was dominant for the first three quarters. Iowa's offense was led by RB Ladell Betts, who carried 31 times for 151 yards, the most ever yards in a single game by an Iowa freshman. Iowa's offense had its best rushing day of the season with 172 yards, but Iowa quarterbacks completed nine of 21 passes for just 108 yards. The Iowa defense was led by DB Matt Bowen with 14 tackles, a pass interception and a forced fumble.

The Hawkeyes scored 60+ points for the third time of the 1997 season. The win was highlighted by an electrifying 92-yard punt return for a TD by Tim Dwight. Dwight also caught a 29-yard touchdown from Randy Reiners, who was making his first start at QB, and threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Damon Gibson. The defense did plenty as well. In addition to pitching a shutout, Matt Bowen and J.P. Lange each added long interception returns for touchdowns.

W    31 - 10

Head Coach: Hayden Fry

Following several first-half mistakes, Iowa's offense got back on track for 21 third-quarter points on the way to a 31-10 victory. The Hawkeyes, behind a potent passing attack, marched beyond midfield three times in the first half only to have the drives end on a fumble, blocked kick and an interception. Iowa tied the game at seven on Tavian Banks' 9-yard run, and the Hawkeyes capped a nine play, 65-yard drive with a 32-yard Zach Bromert field goal for a 10-7 halftime lead. Indiana tied the contest before Iowa charged back to score again on Banks' 16-yard scoring run. Tom Knight gave the Hawkeyes a little breathing room with a 57-yard scoring off an interception return. It was almost a replay of his 60-yard return for a score at Kinnick Stadium the year before last year. Banks ended Iowa's scoring on a 28-yard romp at the end of the third quarter. Banks finished with 80 yards on 15 carries and three touchdowns, while Matt Sherman passed for a season-high 243 yards. Matt Hughes led Iowa defensively with 10 tackles and two sacks while Damien Robinson had six tackles and an interception.

In a contest that went back and forth, Iowa defensive back Tom Knight intercepted an Indiana pass with a 4:36 left in the game and returned it 60-yards for a touchdown. It stopped a Hoosier comeback effort and sealed the fifth win of the season for the Hawkeyes. Iowa drew first blood when Tim Dwight scored a touchdown on a 56-yard reverse midway through the opening quarter. Indiana scored a touchdown on a one-yard run and added a field goal in the second quarter to take a 10-7 halftime lead. The second half featured a relentless ground attack by Indiana and senior Sean Glover, who was making his first career start for the Hoosiers. For the day, Glover rushed for 199 yards on a Kinnick Stadium record 48 carries. The Hoosiers maintained possession of the ball for 36:50 compared to Iowa's 23:10. The Iowa defense held the Hoosiers to only a field goal in the second half. Bobby Diaco recorded 24 tackles, including three for losses and forced one fumble. Iowa's Vernon Rollins and Damien Robinson each had 17 stops.

Hawks fumble on first series, which leads to an Alex Smith TD. As Indiana drove to another score, Billy Coats made an interception in the end zone. After the turnover, Hawks drive down to tie the game on a short TD run by Sedrick Shaw. The Indiana offense was able to move the ball on the ground behind Smith and QB John Paci. Indiana was ahead 14-7 and looking to score again, but was picked off a 2nd time in the end zone, this time by Marquis (Bo) Porter. The Hawks drove down to tie the game, but fumbled again. But Porter picked up another interception to get the ball back. QB Ryan Driscoll scrambled down to the Indiana 20-yard line, but fell on his shoulder, and would miss the rest of the season with a broken collar bone. With Matt Sherman out with a fractured foot, and Jefferson Bates nursing a sore elbow, 4th string QB Mike Duprey entered the game. The drive stalled on a missed 41-yard FG. Iowa was fortunate to only be down 7 points at halftime.

Indiana took a 21-7 lead after their first drive, aided by a successful fake FG. Tavian Banks returned the ensuing kickoff 60 yards to the Indiana 25-yard line. Duprey hit Willie Guy for a 27-yard TD pass.

After holding the Hoosiers to a FG, the Hawks drove for a score, capped by a Tavian Banks 3-yard TD run, but Brion Hurley's PAT was missed. For the season, Iowa is 2 of 7 on field goal attempts and 16 of 21 on extra points.

Indiana would tack on a FG to lead 27-20. Iowa had a chance to win the game with 2:04 left, but Duprey's pass intended for Harold Jasper was intercepted.

Indiana's rushing was the key to the game, with over 300 yards as a team, and Smith ending with 232 yards on 43 carries. That set a new Kinnick Stadium record, breaking the previous high of 39 rushing attempts. It was the third straight homecoming loss for Iowa.

Iowa  @  Indiana   Indiana

L    10 - 16

Head Coach: Hayden Fry

On a rainy and wet field, Iowa fell to 0-3 in the Big Ten for the first time in Hayden Fry's tenure, and offensive is a big reason. Iowa has scored only two touchdowns in its last three games, all losses, and hit a season-low 201 yards of total offense.

After a Scott Plate interception, the Hawks had the ball on the Indiana 20-yard line, but had to settle for a 36-yard FG from Todd Romano. Indiana added 2 FGs to take a 6-3 lead at halftime, as Iowa struggled to move the ball, gaining only 3 first downs in the 1st half.

After a short punt, Indiana marched down for a TD to take a 13-3 lead. Iowa fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and the Hoosiers added another FG. Bo Porter picked off a pass in the end zone to keep the game in reach. The defense struggled to stop the running game of Indiana and Brett Law, who rushed for 144 yards. The defense was able to block a 38-yard FG in the 4th quarter to keep hope alive.

The offense was finally able to move the ball and drove to the Indiana 4-yard line. On 4th and goal, a screen pass to Ryan Terry resulted in Iowa's first TD, and cut the deficit to 16-10, but with only 2 minutes left in the game, there wasn't enough time to get the ball back.

Iowa intercepted Indiana quarterback Trent Green's first three passes as the Hawkeyes rolled to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter. The stunned Hoosiers didn't cross the midfield stripe until the second quarter, as the Iowa defense imposed its will and bottled up the nation's leading rusher Vaughn Dunbar. Iowa running back Mike Saunders scored four touchdowns on the day as he ran for three and caught a scoring strike from backup quarterback Jim Hartlieb, who was filling in for the injured Matt Rodgers. On the day, Hartlieb completed two touchdown passes, the other to wide receiver Danan Hughes, and threw one interception.

The Hawkeyes used a feaflicker play on their first drive to take an early lead on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Chuck Hartlieb to Quinn Early. The Hawks fell behind later in the game 21-20, but a David Hudson TD and Rob Houghtlin FG put the Hawks back up for good. Hartlieb fell just short of recording his third consecutive 300-yard passing game, totaling 271 yards on the day and leading an 80-yard game-winning drive in the fourth quarter.

Houghtlin kicked 3 FGs in the game, and is now the career leader in most FGs in school history (48, previous record was Tom Nichol with 45).

Indiana had a chance to make it interesting late in the game, but interceptions from Dwight Sistrunk (2nd of the game) and Kerry Burt secured the win. The Hawks pulled an upset over the Hoosiers, who were leading the Big Ten at 4-0 and ranked 11th in the nation coming into the game.

Marv Cook was all over the field, catching 4 passes for 94 yards, including a 60-yard critical reception after Iowa fell behind. He also handled the punting duties, and had a 64-yard punt, and averaged 43 yards on the day.

Chuck Long set an NCAA-record for consecutive passes completed with 22 while throwing 2 TDs, and the Iowa defense made a goal line stand in the 4th quarter to hold off the winless Hoosiers. Ronnie Harmon ran for 160 yards and a touchdown despite a neck injury. Owen Gill missed the game due to injury, and will have to wait to break the all-time rushing record. The win put Iowa into first place in the conference.

Mosley rushed for 142 yards on 20 carries for the Hawks, and quarterback Phil Suess passed for 227 yards and completed 17 of 30 passes.

Indiana jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead, but a 73-yard Nile Kinnick punt changed field position to lead to Iowa's first touchdown. Kinnick then used a 55-yard run to set up Iowa's second touchdown. Erwin Prasse caught his second touchdown pass of the game to give Iowa 20 unanswered points, but Indiana countered with a touchdown pass of their own just before halftime. Indiana dominated play in the third period, taking a nine-point lead. Diehl got a crucial interception to stop another Indiana drive early in the fourth period, and Iowa responded with an 11 play drive to cut Indiana's lead to 3 points. Green came up with an interception that gave Iowa the ball in Indiana territory. Iowa advanced to the Indiana ten-yard line. Rather than attempt a game-tying field goal with minutes to play, Iowa went for the win on 4th down and got it, as Kinnick fired his third touchdown pass to Prasse.
