Gator Bowl (Jacksonville, FL)

#10 Iowa  vs  #11 Florida   Florida

L    6 - 14

Head Coach: Hayden Fry

Cold weather stalled a couple of high-powered offenses in the 39th annual Gator Bowl as Florida defeated Iowa 14-6. The wind chill at game time was 13 degrees below zero. The Hawkeyes and Gators combined for six interceptions, 19 penalties and only seven of 31 third down conversions in the ragged contest. The play of the game took place with 1:08 left in the first half. Tom Nichol, attempting to punt out of his own end zone, misplayed a high snap and Florida's Doug Drew covered it for a touchdown. Nichol scored the Hawkeyes' only points on a pair of short field goals. Owen Gill led the Hawkeye offense with 83 yards rushing.

#12 Iowa  @  #10 Michigan   Michigan

L    13 - 16

Iowa kicker Tom Nichol booted a school record 56-yard FG to cut the halftime deficit to 6-3. Down 13-3, Iowa ran a fake FG and holder Tom Grogan passed to Lon Olejniczak for the TD. The Hawks got an interception from Joe Schuster and added another Nichol FG to tie the game. Mike Stoops and Keith Hunter picked off passes in the next two Michigan series but could not convert it into points. Iowa was looking to drive for the winning score late in the 4th quarter, but a fumble by Owen Gill (who rushed for 120 yards on the day) gave Michigan the ball with time to get in FG range.

Michigan kicker Bob Bergeron kicked his 3rd FG of the game, a 45-yard FG with 8 seconds left to give the Wolverines the victory.

Iowa faced off against former Iowa player and assistant coach, Denny Green, who came in with a 1-3 record with the only win a 10-8 nail biter at Indiana. That was also the only game that would see the Wildcats score. The Hawks would go on to dominate the game with record breaking (and tying) performances as 14 different records (Big Ten, Iowa or Kinnick Stadium) were broken and three were tied.
