1955-1956 Iowa Basketball Year in Review


Big Ten Champions and NCAA Regional Champions (Final Four)Big Ten Champions and NCAA Regional Champions (Final Four)

The "Fabulous Five" made up of Carl Cain, Bill Logan, Sharm Scheuerman, Bill Schoof and Bill Seaberg, ended the season as NCAA runners‑up, dropping an 83‑71 decision to No. 1‑ranked San Francisco. It was their second consecutive trip to the Final Four. Iowa lost its Big Ten opener before winning 13 consecutive games to take a second straight conference title. Cain was a first team All‑American and Logan led the team in scoring and rebounding.

The Hawkeyes reached the NCAA Championship finals against the undefeated San Francisco Dons, led by Bill Russell. The game was held at McGaw Hall in Evanston, Illinois. The Dons entered the season on a 26-game winning streak and exited with a record 55 in a row by becoming the first undefeated team (29-0) ever to win the NCAA title. Iowa, the Big Ten champ for the second straight year, came into the NCAA final on a 17-game win streak of its own before losing, 83-71. In the game, Russell scored 26 points, had 27 rebounds, 20 blocks, 3 steals and 1 assist.
