#3 Iowa  vs  #4 Penn State   Penn State

W    23 - 17

Head Coach: Kirk Ferentz

Spencer Petras threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Nico Ragaini to complete Iowa's comeback from a two-touchdown deficit (behind 17-3), all accomplished while Penn State's offense did next to nothing after quarterback Sean Clifford was knocked out of the game. He led the Lions to 17 points early in the game.

Iowa won the field-position battle thanks to the work of punter Tory Taylor, who repeatedly pinned Penn State deep in its own end after Clifford went out in the second quarter. Iowa kept adding critical points with 3 field goals by Caleb Shudak, including a 48-yard FG.

The sellout crowd of 70,000 had a major impact when the Lions were near their own end zone, forcing numerous false starts. The defense settled down, holding PSU to 3 points in the second half, and getting 4 more interceptions on the day.

Iowa  @  #5 Penn State   Penn State

W    21 - 10

Head Coach: Kirk Ferentz

ESPN's College GameDay was in State College for the Saturday night Big Ten opener. The Hawkeyes fell behind early, 10-0. But Iowa would score 21 unanswered points after that to stun Penn State for the second consecutive year. The defense shut down the Nittany Lions in the final three quarters, forcing four turnovers, and the turning point in the game came when Penn State punted, clinging to a 10-5 lead in the fourth quarter, Adrian Clayborn blocked a punt and ran it back 53 yards for a touchdown to give the Hawkeyes the lead. With the momentum changed, they were more easily able to move the ball on their final two drives. The win at Penn State on prime-time network television catapulted Iowa to a number 13 ranking in the AP Poll and a number 17 ranking in the Coaches' Poll.

Rain fell virtually all day for Iowa's game at Penn State. Things initially looked bleak for Iowa as the 8th-ranked Nittany Lions took the opening kickoff and drove the length of the field for a 7-0 lead. That's when Iowa junior Tim Dwight turned his motor up a notch and turned on the afterburners for an 83-yard punt return to knot the score at 7. Trailing 20-14 at halftime, Iowa's defense got stronger, limiting the Nittany Lions to just 73 yards over the final 2 quarters. With Sedrick Shaw nursing injuries, junior Tavian Banks rushed for 116 yards in 26 attempts and the winning touchdown - an 8-yard run on first and goal. It followed a 25-yard pass from running back Rob Thein to Demo Odems. Defensive back Kerry Cooks setup Iowa's final score when his sack of quarterback Wally Richardson forced a fumble (which Iowa recovered). The win was Iowa's first over a Top 10 ranked team since a 54-28 win over 5th-ranked Illinois in 1990. Damien Robinson led the Hawkeyes with 10 tackles, while Matt Hughes added 9.
