With one home game remaining against Western Michigan, Iowa held a three-game winning streak and a 6-5 overall record. But the Hawkeyes lost to the Broncos, 28-19, and gave up 489 yards in the process, ending any hopes for a bowl game. The Hawks gave up an early TD, then fumbled the ensuing kickoff. The Broncos kicked a FG to take an early 9-0 lead. Later in the half, WMU went for it on 4th down and converted with a TD pass. Western Michigan took a 19-0 second quarter lead. Iowa scored right before the half to cut the deficit to 19-6. One of two blocked FGs kept WMU from scoring right before halftime. Iowa scored a TD after half to make it 19-13. The Broncos scored again to make it 25-13. The Hawks got lucky with a dropped interception by the Broncos, and converted into a TD to make it 25-19. Iowa would get the ball back and was looking to tie the game, but QB Jake Christensen threw an interception with 5 minutes remaining. Iowa forced a fumble on the interception return, but could not recover. The Broncos kicked a FG to lead 28-19. Iowa drove down to the 10-yard line with 30 seconds left, but turned it over on downs. Christensen was 20-of-37 for 249 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions, and Albert Young rushed for 95 yards.
