In a victory that appeared improbable at halftime down 17-3 with very little offense, Iowa scored 17 unanswered points in the second half sparked by a running game that found its groove with a pair of scores by Albert Young. His first touchdown was a 26-yard run untouched, to bring the Hawks back to 17-10. He finished with 179 yards on 34 carries. The second score tied it up at 17-17. Daniel Murray also had two FGs over 40 yards (43 and 47 yards). MSU converted a 4th-and-1 with 1 minute to go, and completed a 40-yard pass with 20 seconds left. Brett Swenson kicked a 29-yard FG with to send the game into OT.

MSU scored first in OT on a short TD run. Jake Christensen threw a 23-yard TD to Paul Chaney Jr. on 2nd-and-20 to tie up the game and send it to a second OT. Iowa scored on a short TD run by Jevon Pugh in their possession. Adrian Clayborn sacked Brian Hoyer on 3rd-and-6 for a loss of 7, and the defense held on 4th down for the win.
