The Hawks defeated the defending Rose Bowl champions with outstanding play from Eldean Matheson, who set up Iowa's winning touchdown with a 52-yard punt return down to the 3-yard line. Jerry Reichow scored on a QB sneak on 4th and goal from the 1-yard line to take the lead. Earl Smith scored Iowa's first TD on a 32-yard run in the second period.
