RECAP

Fullback Joe Williams started the scoring with a burst through the middle of the Ohio State line to score on a 50 yard TD run. Ohio State answered that TD quickly with a touchdown of their own, but then the Hawks literally exploded. The Hawks reeled off 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a 28-6 halftime lead. But the game was not over. Ohio State opened the third quarter with a quick TD to close to 28-12, and the teams battled furiously for the rest of the quarter. Then, with Iowa backed up on its own 9-yard line, halfback Larry Ferguson broke an electrifying 91-yard touchdown run to break the game open.

The Hawkeyes racked up 487 yards of offense against the Buckeyes.

At the time it was the worst loss of head coach Woody Hayes' time at Ohio State. Hayes was asked to comment on Evashevski retiring from coaching at the end of the year.

"Certainly the game will miss Evy. Without question he's the greatest offensive coach in the country. His offense is always good and his teams are never anything but good. He's the only coach in the business who year in and year out has an offense in November. By November everybody knows everybody else's offense except Evy's. He always comes up with something." - Woody Hayes

Former Iowa star Duke Slater was on hand for the win. He was one of the first to congratulate Evy after the victory. "I want to shake your hand, I want to pay a helluva tribute to a helluva coach. They don't come any better" - Duke Slater

The Iowa seniors carried Evashevski off the field on their shoulders to a standing ovation by the Iowa crowd. He was given the game ball by the team and one player even wrote "Evashevski for President" on the blackboard in the locker room.

The win over #3 Ohio State allowed the Hawks to tie for the conference lead with Minnesota. It was the last home game for Coach Forest Evashevski at Iowa. Clips from highlights run from 28:20-29:40.

PLAYER GAME QUOTES

Gerald 'Jerry' Mauren We had a team meeting after practice Tuesday night and decided to dedicate the game to Evy, and to give him the game ball. He's the greatest coach and terrific to work for. Evy knows his men and you know you're safe on the field, he'll take care of you.
-- Gerald 'Jerry' Mauren

Gerald 'Jerry' Mauren We couldn't let the 'Old Man' down. No one could. We made up our minds that we were going to be up for this game and win it for Evy-and of course, for ourselves.
-- Gerald 'Jerry' Mauren

Charles Lee We decided Tuesday night that if we won we'd tell Evy we dedicated the game to him and give him the game ball, but if we lost we wouldn't say anything about it.
-- Charles Lee

COACH GAME QUOTES

Forest Evashevski Maybe Ohio State was not really up for this game. When Woody Hayes is facing me across the field, I'm always worried. I have a lot of respect for him and his teams are tough to handle
-- Forest Evashevski

Forest Evashevski I won't try to get these kids out of the clouds until Monday. Then we must work hard for Notre Dame.
-- Forest Evashevski
