RECAP

A huge matchup of #1 vs #3 happened in Minneapolis. On an attempted punt after Iowa's first series of downs, a pass from center went over John Calhoun's head and Minnesota took possession and quickly scored. Iowa threatened to score early on with the ball on the 5-yard line, but ended up with a Tom Moore FG. Fullback Joe Williams ran for a TD early in the second half to give the Hawks a 10-7 lead. However, two more Iowa mistakes turned into Gopher touchdowns. The Hawks were held to only 198 yards. it would be the only loss of the year, and prevented Iowa from going to the Rose Bowl with a chance for a unanimous national championship.

Iowa had several injuries, that forced players to come out of the game. Including 3 costly ones on the offensive line. Center Bill Vanburen, Guard Bill DiCindio, and Tackle Chet Williams.

PLAYER GAME QUOTES

Bill Van Buren They asked me if I was all right, and I said yes, so they put me back in.
-- Bill Van Buren
Van Buren talking about his hyper extended elbow in the Minnesota game.

Wilburn Hollis Sure they have a good defense, but I don't think we did too bad. That's the way they win their ball games (defensively). When you shoot 3 men, one of them is bound to be right.
-- Wilburn Hollis

COACH GAME QUOTES

Forest Evashevski When you get licked as thoroughly as we did today, it looks silly for us to say anything about that (injuries). We did have several players hurt, but I would not want to take anything away from a fine Minnesota team.
-- Forest Evashevski
