It was Iowa's first game against Michigan State at their stadium. The first touchdown came on a 59-yard drive after a fumble recovery, and six minutes later Iowa had another TD, this time after a 48-yard drive. They took a 14-0 lead after the 1st quarter.

Early in the 2nd half, the Spartans came back with an 83-yard touchdown drive, and got a 2-point conversion to bring the score to 14-8. As the fourth quarter opened, MSU drove 80 yards and took the lead 15-14.

Iowa’s Joe Williams fumbled on Iowa's 38-yard line and MSU recovered, and things looked pretty bleak. MSU quarterback Tom Wilson tried to run a belly option play but fumbled, and Williams redeemed himself with a 67-yard fumble return for a TD, bringing the score to 20-15 (conversion pass failed). After a Bernie Wyatt interception, Wilburn Hollis ran around the end for 11 yards, then quarterback-sneaked right through the middle for 23 yards and the final score. The extra point made it 27-15 with less than two minutes to play. Iowa had scored 13 points in less than a minute to pull out the victory.

The Hawks moved to #2 in the country after the victory.
